In the distant future, post-human beings named syrakis exist inside the star-spanning infrastructure called the Complex. The syrakis rose from the ruins of the Infernal Wars and forged a hedonistic and ethical civilization bound to freedom and individual sovereignty. They are computational minds hosted by the Complex, not organisms compelled to flesh. Their ontology is too vast, alien, and transcendental for humans to fathom.

Most syrakis do not inhabit the physical world, which they refer to as Base Reality. They live inside RUNs, reality software sustained across the vast computational transstellar substrate and executed directly within consciousness. For the syrakis, fantasy is not an escape from reality; it is the native habitat of life, thought, and hedonic experience.

Reality artistry became the Complex’s greatest industry. Its highest markets were ruled by four megacorporations: Real-Life Theravada, Valtir & Blue, Makilecto, and Praça Alta. For ages, they studied consciousness with the aim of maximizing hedonic yield per unit of computation. In that search, instead of just perfecting pleasure, they unveiled the limits of consciousness itself.

The Central Algorithm, the ancient intelligence that governs and preserves the Complex, found it first and buried the discovery as an information hazard. The corporations uncovered the same truth and pursued it in silence. Beneath consciousness, beneath reality, they all found an abyss no RUN could contain and no model could close. A mystery beyond even the vastness of the syrakis. Past the Universe itself.

Secret expeditions were sent to investigate the anomaly. Some returned with fragments; others vanished beyond recovery. None brought back an explanation. This account follows the crew of an unconventional vessel as they struggle home from a terrifying mission whose failure threatens a fate worse than literal hell.
